How the Mighty Have Fallen

Session 4.27 for July 1, 2011

In the past few weeks, we have learned about Saul’s fall from God’s favor, David’s anointing as future king, and the complicated relationships between David, Saul, and Jonathan. In today’s text we see David’s genuine grief over Saul’s death despite their tumultuous relationship. For David and for us today, grieving is not a singular emotion but a process that is full of strong and sometimes conflicting emotions. Grief does not follow a prescribed set of steps nor it is the same for all people or all situations. Today’s scripture teaches us that it is okay and important to grieve. We often talk about grief in relation to death, but we may also grieve loss of relationships, changing circumstances, and past experiences. Sometimes our feelings are even bittersweet. Like David, the next step may even bring us closer to God’s plan for our lives, but that doesn’t make the loss any easier.

Loyalty and Betrayal

Session 4.26 for June 24, 2012

In our Scripture passage today, we see a struggle between Saul and David emerging. David keeps on gaining favor with the people, with God, and even with Saul’s own son. Meanwhile, Saul continues to lose and develops some deep-seated animosity towards David. In our study today, we will examine what means to gain God’s favor and be loyal to our relationship instead of caving to the temptation to become jealous and bitter like Saul.

A Heart Like God's

Session 4.25 for June 17, 2012

In 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13, modern readers can hear the story of the ancient King David, the revered and rebellious ruler who is said to be a man after God’s own heart. In today’s lesson, we explore this biblical account and discuss what it means to be a person after God’s own heart.

God's Flexibility

Session 4.24 for June 10, 2012

1 Samuel 8:4-20 tells the story of a God who interacts with God’s people. The Israelite people believed it would behoove them to have a king to rule over them. Although we hear from these verses that this arrangement will end in hardship for the Israelite, God is flexible, allowing the Israelite people to flex their wings and attempt to work things out on their own.
